Tokyo Record Bar

Tokyo Record Bar

Cuisine: Japanese

Location: West Village

Vibe: Speak Easy

Favorites: Salmon

Money: $$$

When you picture a cool speakeasy type restaurant with some sort of gimmick, this is exactly what you are thinking and need in your life. This is located underneath a really cute champagne bar in the West Village. Upon descending very steep stairs into a literal basement with about 10 tables, you take your seat and are to write down 2-4 songs of your choice from a list of records they have. They categorize the music by decades and have everything from The Beatles to Prince- all the classics. The food is Omakase style, so once you are done picking songs you don't have to do anything else but enjoy! They have a live DJ there that plays everyones requested songs in a remix. The food is a variety of Japanese inspired foods and pretty tasty. They end the night with a slice of pizza, which the chef explains is because he used to leave Omakase spots hungry so wants to ensure his guests aren't. This is definitely one of the most immersive and fun spots for a date or girls dinner. My only hesitation on giving this a rave review is the fact that at the end of our meal, about 5 cockroaches came out of the wall and we had to leave immediately. They blamed the rain and the fact that it's in a basement. It's also New York City so it wasn't shocking, but disgusting none the less. I will not be going back for this reason, but if you don't mind potentially seeing some roaches run across your table- would recommend for a date!
